This semester's best course...

Hi everyone! Today I'll be talking about my favorite class this semester, which is easily Intro to Literary Studies (EH 300). My instructor is Dr. Steven Trout, and his class is genuinely a blast. EH 300 is a requirement for English majors and is considered a gateway course; once you've taken it, most all other EH classes open up for you.

The primary goal of the course is to teach us critical analysis skills when it comes to reading and studying literature. It gives us the tools we need to dig into any literary work that falls into our hands-- we should be able to read a work and examine it through many different lenses in order to garner further appreciation and understanding of it.

Dr. Trout himself is a wonderful professor with a real, tangible love for literature. He is especially fond of American literature; the books we're reading in EH 300 are all by American authors, such as Ernest Hemingway, Willa Cather, and William Faulkner. His passion shines through his easy-going teaching and makes the material that much more enjoyable and accessible.

There's a common narrative that follows analyses of literature-- that the analyst is "dissecting" a book. We take grievance with that notion. Dissection is a sterile and detached process involving the dead. Literature is an ever-changing experience, a living experience. We don't dissect works... we listen to them.

I hope some of you get the opportunity to take this class! Until next time...
