5 things you need to be doing NOW to prepare for college!

  Howdy future Jags!

We're approaching the middle of the semester, which means the end of your senior year is ever encroaching! You may be wondering what to do at this point if college is on the table for you. It can be overwhelming; I remember what it was like to be in your shoes! Luckily, here are some tips I have for you to make sure you've got your ducks in a row:

  1. Make sure that you have all of the necessary credits and classes to graduate. This may seem obvious, and your counselors should be monitoring that with you as well, but you'd be surprised at how many students I knew that were blindsided by credits they had to make up before they could graduate! Review your school's requirements!

  2. Start researching the colleges you're interested in and take note of their application and scholarship deadlines. The priority deadline for scholarships at South is December 1st. Start narrowing down your choices now so you can get those applications in in time.

  3. Schedule a campus visit. This is a surefire way to get an idea of whether or not you want to attend a university or not. Does the campus feel like home to you? You won't know unless you visit! You can schedule a tour at South by calling 251-460-7834.

  4. Start getting your documents together now and apply. Most universities require at least your standardized test scores and high school transcripts alongside their application. You need to talk to your counselors about submitting these scores and documents in a timely fashion if you need to meet a deadline.

  5. Just breathe. Choosing your schools and submitting applications can be stressful. Don't procrastinate and get it done, and you'll feel a lot better. This is an important process, but it's not the end of the world, and there are plenty of officials not only at your high school but also at your college of choice who are more than willing to help you along the way.

Everything will be ok! Get out there and begin your foray into the college adventure!

Until next time...
