My Life as an English Major!

Hey everyone! Long time no see!

Today I'd like to share some of my favorite things about being an English major here at South. I love the program here and will sing its praises until the cows come home. Without further ado, here's some insight about what it's like to be a part of the English department:

  1. Our faculty is top-notch.
The English faculty is so kind and dedicated to ensuring their students are well-prepared for their time here at South. I have so many professors in the department that I feel comfortable approaching for advice on how best to tackle my future. You really get the sense that these professors not only love what they're doing, but that they also care about their students and want the best for them.

  2. You can concentrate in Literature or Creative Writing.
I'm a Literature concentration, but if Creative Writing is more your jam, then we have a fantastic new extension of the department at the Stokes Writing Center. Every creative writer I know in the program loves it to pieces. I love concentrating in Literature myself because I have always been a fan of analyzing novels.

  3. Regardless, you do a lot of writing!
Even if you're not looking to be a creative writer, as English majors, our primary work is done through writing! Writing well is one of the most valuable tools you can have, regardless of your discipline; you can go forward in so many careers if you have strong communication skills in your writing. If you find that you have a knack for writing, be it creatively or academically, you should definitely consider the benefits of joining our department and honing those skills.

  4. Every semester, we have unique and ever-changing special topics courses.
These special topics courses change each semester and cover a wide array of material. For example, next semester we are offering a Civil Rights literature class, as well as a class called "The Hero's Journey," where students will have the opportunity to read Harry Potter! These unique classes are fun and interesting, and you never quite know what to expect.

  5. Grad school is right around the corner.
South offers a Master's program in English, taught by the same faculty that handles your undergraduate experience. If you're considering graduate school after your undergraduate degree, South's English MA program is affordable and enticing. Eligible students can get their tuition waived and a stipend for enrolling in their MA program.

I hope this helped you get more of an idea of what our English department is like. If you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to drop me a line!

Until next time...
Evy
